Outdoors this weekend

Post by idontknow316 Sun Jun 14, 2009 3:19 pm

The site seems pretty quiet so I thought I would see if anyone got into any good fishing this weekend. We picked up some cats from the bay, and I hit Resthaven for a min got aggravated with all the cottonwood and small fish, and dropped the boat in the bay and did some bassin. I did pretty damn good despite the NE winds all weekend long. I will be doing some fishing at East Harbor fathers day weekend as we are camping for fathers day. Very Happy May go bassin again tomorrow, we will see how work treats me.

Will do, a buddy of mine (Bill) known as WLB on the forums pulls some real pigs out of the bay, just shows how under fished some parts of the HUGE lake are...

Did you shore fish the bay?

I shore fish it sometimes, I have a little jon boat so I only like to take that into little coves and boat houses, marinas etc etc. The quality of fish is alot better out of the bay than say at Resthaven or other popular spots. There isn't really that much pressure either, and even if there were the area is way too big to be hit really hard in one spot. Are you familiar with the Sandusky area?

Well the boat houses there behind the police station is a really nice spot, thats where I spent my time bassin this weekend. Wink If I see that they are just cruising around near the surface, chasing the gills I like to tie on a bomber fat a. It is a shallow diving crank that has a lot of wobble to it. This is one of my favorites this time of year because the bass are protecting their fry, and they hit that lure hard. I also like to use a zoom fluke texas rigged weightless. The slow fall and erratic action gets them every time. This is good after a front too. The key to fishing the bay IMO is to find big rocks. I like to find the biggest rocks I can find, they like to sit in between the rocks and ambush. Its pretty cool because they seem to come out of nowhere. If you are fishing marinas I would say your fluke is the best bet, because they are pretty easily skipped up underneath the floating docks. I know in Sandusky there is a channel that runs through the bay for the bigger boats that run to the coal docks. If you have a fish/depth finder target that drop off, they often sit right on the edge of the drop off. I like a tube in the channel. A deep diving crank is good too, I like the storm lighting shad, deep diver with a lot of wobble. Spinner baits work pretty good in the open areas of marinas, along weed lines and I even like to throw the spinner bait right on top of the weed line if possible. There are a lot of great areas in and around the bay. I could go on for days Big Water Fishing The area around tgi Fridays is good too. This is at the beginning of the Cedar Point causeway. All along the deck area is good, and Pipe creek that runs into it all the way to the RR tracks is all good stuff.

My buddy got a 17 incher, the biggest one on a green lizard.

No problem, the canoe would be perfect for the boathouse area. Lots of habitat there. You'll find some slips hold a lot more than others. Let me know when you plan on dropping the ol canoe in and I'll see if I can get there to get my boat in the water too. It is not the easiest place to put a boat in though just so you know. There is no boat ramp near the police station. But if I can get mine in you should be able to get yours in with no problem.

Yeah bass can be elusive at times, I think that is what makes it so much fun. And when they are on in the bay you can pick one after another all day long. Bass fishing is one of my favorite kind of fishing.

I'll be waiting for you OneMoreCast, you can come up anytime. Scarlet and Grey jon boat...I like it, I should paint my boat Brown and Orange. lol! I do catch smallmouth but it is usually a little earlier in the spring. You can certainly catch them year round in the bay but the main population is usually off of the islands in a little deeper water. I'm a Little short on time today but I will try to get a pic of the one I caught earlier in the year. Let me know when you plan on coming and we will see if we can line something up. I enjoy showing people my honey holes. Big Fish
