Outdoors Ice Fishing Report in Central Ohio

Post by Banker Mon Jan 05, 2009 1:45 pm

Ice Fishing in Central Ohio??? Yep- it's true and possible but unsafe and tricky. Central Ohio (columbus) is the meeting point for 3-4 different weather systems. Because of this we usually don't have a traditional winter ..hence traditional ice fishing. I grew up on Erie North of Detroit and are winters were pretty basic, when is snowed it snowed when it rained it rained and that we about it. Here is snow turining into rain turning into freezing rain and then rain again. Getting out on the ice- especially before Feb. means timing it right and reading up on reports often. In Michigan first Ice is in December and last ice in is March. In Central Ohio we experience first and last ice multiple times throughout the season. Wednesday is first Ice- Sunday is last ice - open water till Wednesday again and so on. So in order to ice fish before Feb. you need to keep an eye on both the weather and fishing reports like these. Feb is usually good for the first 3 weeks or so. But remember good is never equivalant to safe. For there is no thing as safe ice, it's only as safe as those walking on it. There isn't good ice on any lakes now- but that will change sooner than later- no telling how long it will stay- but cold weather is on it's way and will be around long enough for ice fishing maybe as soon as this upcoming weekend.
